Egg on My Face

Fried_eggsI’m ridiculously embarrassed. Why? Simply put, my blog was hacked and I didn’t have a backup of my content.

I thought I might be able to work around it in the beginning. The first call I made to my hosting provider proved fruitless. I was told that it was a good thing I was on Linux because I could check my history to see what files had been altered. I was left to my own devices, but that didn’t work.

I had a lot to do that week (and it was a bad week in general), so I waited until the weekend to try again. During the second call, the representative from my hosting provider told me that he would put in a security ticket. The security team would then look at my hosting account to see what happened.

A few days later, I got an email stating they had removed the malicious files from my site (they really hadn’t – the same hacker homepage was showing). They said that my problem was due to an insecure theme and an outdated version of WordPress. They told me to use my backups to reload my site.

Well, that wasn’t happening since there was no backup. I actually did think I had one – or that I at least had an automated backup system in place – but I couldn’t find anything. I didn’t trust that all of the bad files were removed, so I wiped everything clean and decided to start all over again.

So here I am.

Learn from my mistakes. I guarantee, I won’t make these again.
