Chapter 27

Remy did her best to remain calm and professional as the afternoon patients came and went, but it was hard. Dr. Sam tried to play it cool too, but his eyes twinkled every time he looked at her. He was clearly in a tizzy and her heart reacted, beating harder and faster as the day went along. Until four o’clock.

A patient entered the waiting room, Mrs. Timmons, a tiny ancient woman who’d been a regular patient for quite some time. Remy barely said hello when the door slammed wide open and Jeremy strutted in with a savage scowl on his face. [Read more…]

Chapter 26

Sam Kendrick regarded Remy carefully, surprised by what seemed like a sudden change of attitude towards him. Remy thought she saw the sides of his mouth turn up a bit, but if he was happy to hear her ask him to get a drink, he was doing his best to hide his change in mood.

“Are you in trouble? Are you getting strange phone calls again?” Dr. Kendrick couldn’t keep the concern from his voice.

“No, no. It’s not that. Not recently, anyway. I – I’d just really like to talk.” Remy finished confidently and waited for Dr. Sam to reply. [Read more…]

Chapter 25

Remy unwrapped her sandwich and opened her bag of chips. She closed her eyes and sighed, enjoying the simplicity of lunch. The break room was empty, and she enjoyed a moment of peace. No drama with Irene, no awkwardness with Dr. Sam, no visits from Jeremy, who was still visiting his sick mother… the moment was short-lived. She felt her blood pressure rise immediately as her cell phone vibrated twice, indicating a new text. She should have left the thing off. What good did it do her to leave it on? Still, she couldn’t help smiling to herself. After all, there were two men fighting over her. How many women could say the same?

Feast or famine, she sighed, biting into her sandwich. Irene’s words of advice echoed in her mind as she ate. Irene had known Dr. Sam for years. He was a nice guy. Give him a chance. Remy couldn’t help the image that popped into her head. She imagined going on another date with Sam. Kissing him. She pictured moving in with him, wondered what he would be like at home. Did he run a household the same way he ran an office? He certainly did take responsibility for his office… and even when he was having a rough day, Remy had seen him with his patients. He always treated them with the utmost respect. Remy wondered if that’s the way he would treat a wife. A wife!? He’s your boss, she mumbled, her voice breaking up the daydream. [Read more…]

Chapter 24

“Oh, Irene. He is not.”

“Remy, I wouldn’t lie to you. He is. Seriously. And I don’t think you get it.”

“Irene, stop.”

“Remy. Stop and smell the roses. I know you were out with him one night. And I know you had fun. If Jeremy weren’t around, you’d pay more attention to Sam. I know you would.”

“But, Irene. Jeremy aside, I thought you wanted him?”

“Me?” Irene laughed. “No, not me.” [Read more…]

Chapter 23

Remy hated going to work in the morning. She’d been up half the night, thinking, worrying. Her mysterious caller hadn’t bothered her again, but that didn’t stop her waiting for the phone to ring any minute. And there was Jeremy, and Sam, and their love interest. If either of them really knew what love was. She wasn’t sure she did either, and she sure didn’t know what she felt about the two of them.

She could ignore Jeremy for a while this morning, letting his texts go unanswered until she wanted to reply. But Sam? He’d be there in the office, in front of her all day, or nearby at least. He’d been very professional in the office so far, but somehow she wondered if he’d keep that up. [Read more…]

Chapter 22

Remy backed herself against the wall in the hallway, out of sight of the living room doors and windows, cringing with every ring of the phone and wondering if Sam Kendrick could hear the phone ringing from outside. Maybe if he heard it ringing he’d realize she wasn’t there to pick it up.

Her thoughts were again interrupted when he stopped ringing the doorbell. Instead, he switched to a thunderous, booming knock. [Read more…]

CHAPTER 21

“Dr. Kendrick – Sam…” Remy averted her head just in time to avoid his leering lips. If she hadn’t had the desk behind her to grab hold of, she was sure she would have landed flat on her back.

“What’s up with you? I’ve been waiting all week for this. You’ve been avoiding me.”

“No, I haven’t. I’m here to work. That’s what I’ve been doing.” Remy, although proud for standing up for herself, wondered if she spoke a bit too gruffly. [Read more…]

Chapter 20

Remy couldn’t help but smile. For the first time, she seemed to be forming a bond, an actual bond, with Jeremy. So his ex-girlfriend was a psycho—he wanted no part of it. So he freaked out—his mother was sick and he was going through a rough patch.

He couldn’t stop thinking about her. She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. Remy looked at her and smiled, leaning in for more. [Read more…]

Chapter 19

Jeremy scratched his ear in silence for a moment. “I don’t know,” he finally muttered, “I guess I’ll have to talk to her again.”

“That didn’t work very well before,” Remy said.

He turned and stared at her. “What do you think I should do?”

What did she think? This was her problem? “I have no idea. No, wait- you could get a restraining order, I suppose.”

Jeremy brightened. “Hey, that’s good, right, I will.” [Read more…]

Chapter 18

Remy shifted uncomfortably, not exactly sure what she should say to Jeremy. The explanation he had given her about his mother being ill made all the sense in the world to her. She could hardly fault him for acting badly in that situation, though she wished the episode hadn’t been so downright threatening.

Still, she hesitated. Remy was willing to let Jeremy have his say, but she wasn’t about to open herself up to a dangerous situation. He watched her patiently as she struggled to find the right words. Rather than opening the door, she pulled the key back out of the lock and motioned towards the step as she sat, inviting him to sit with her.

“We should talk,” Jeremy said. “I’ve wanted to talk to you for a while now – about what happened that day when Barbara showed up…?” He trailed off, posing his statement as a question, checking to see if she remembered. As if she could forget. [Read more…]
